Danny Mad
Danny was born and raised on our beautiful island and is the founder of Freediving Curacao©. He has a full time job as an Air Traffic Controller instructor and in his free time he teaches freediving, competes, goes surfing, assists and promotes clean ups organized by different local organizations, trying to make a difference. He is also a certified PFI advanced and safety diver. In 2016 he became the first and only local to ever participate in a freediving competition. He placed 3rd in FIM with a dive to 51m at the Deepsea Challenge in 2016 and officially holds all national records of Curacao. He is dedicated in helping students to unlock their true potential in a safe manner. He's been freediving since 2008 and started teaching in 2017. He talks about himself and freediving:
" I never believed in doing apnea courses. It's simply the way we are raised here... in denial for most things, until one day I attended a freedive competition here organized by Performance Freediving International (PFI). Since then my curiosity started to grow. I wanted to know more. I did courses with them and I was amazed, completely mind blown on how much I was learning! I was taught by famous folks such as Kirk Krack, Ashley Chapman, Shelby Eisenberg, Walid Boudhiaf, William Trubridge, Goran Colak, Jonathan Sunnex, Dean Chaouche etc. I learned the do's and dont's, techniques to improve my diving and more importantly... safety! I realized how easily things can go wrong and therefor made safety the number one priority during my classes. I want people to know the potential risks when safety protocols are not followed. Learning from different organizations enabled me to notice that not every dive school or instructor out there knows or puts enough emphasis on safety. This is not acceptable as it will eventually cause you unnecessary injuries. The sport is becoming more and more commercialized, just another way to make money. This sadly affects the quality of teaching and the content of courses. Due to my freediving backround, I'm the only one teaching all safety protocols, diving techniques, tips and tricks according to the course level in our region.
My advice: Take a freediving course!
But before you do, do some research before you choose an instructor or school. This is very important. Ask around for feedback. This will for sure be beneficial because in the end, it's an investment in yourself! See you in the deep blue." - Danny
